Usher has always known the power of a moment, and in “Bad Habits,” he returns to the spotlight with the certainty of an artist who knows exactly where to plant himself. The Las Vegas Residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, his latest single plays less like an out-of-the-blue release and more like a mission statement. This is Usher back on his turf, fully formed, introspective, and eager to entertain.
After the emotional weight of his Black Lives Matter–inspired track “I Cry,” “Bad Habits” turns its focus inward. Combing through the verses with its intriguing run-on homages in Memphis and bounce music, but even from the simplest of these early listens, we still get a clear sense of how Usher fits into his work here, on “Don’t Waste My Time,” that fit is snug enough to find room to be witty again. His singing swoops with studied ease, his mix of openness and control one few artists can mimic without sounding forced.
“Bad Habits” also acts as a bridge from solitude to reconnection. As Usher himself observed, the year 2020 left people holding in repressed energy and anxiety. This song transforms that tension into something rhythmic, honest, and whole. “Bad Habits” is not about chasing trends but about reminding us why Usher remains a modern voice in R&B, one that’s seasoned, self-aware, and still able to confess and feel smooth.
