Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter Luna Morgenstern releases her new six-track EP, "heartbreak hotel," turning separation into something deeply personal and unexpectedly danceable. The 18-minute, 20-second project tackles the complicated emotional experience of a relationship falling apart through honest storytelling, warm synths, throwback breakbeats, and ethereal vocals.
Produced by Morgenstern with Nick Ribbens and Raven Aartsen, "heartbreak hotel" is a collection of rooms, each song a different emotional stage of parting ways. The EP explores doubt, separation, escapism, and the gradual process of letting go.
The first song, "hush hush", captures the tension of holding on to a relationship that slips away as uncertainty grows. Morgenstern juxtaposes musical ideas, marrying four-to-the-floor kicks with UK garage breaks and pairing a direct emotional perspective with a nursery-rhyme-inspired melody.
"miss u" heads into post-breakup reminiscing and the Pain of losing the intimacy once shared. "spiral" brings that emotional turbulence to the club, painting a picture of escapism, numbness, anxiety, and isolation on an increasingly intense night out. "somebody else" and "free/fall" close out the six-song journey, finishing a project built around the messy business of moving on.
The most interesting thing about "heartbreak hotel" is its capacity to hold melancholy and movement in the same space. Morgenstern welcomes the feeling of crying while dancing with strangers, creating emotional unraveling that can still thrum, move, and breathe. "heartbreak hotel" is personal, cohesive, and emotionally immersive, making the stages of separation into a late-night soundtrack where heartbreak doesn't have to stand still.
