American queer alt-pop singer-songwriter Courtney Govan is back with "your opinion," a new personal track about self-love, outside judgment, and the challenging process of learning not to judge yourself by other people's standards. It reminds you that real self-love starts when external judgment no longer defines your value.
The track is built around an experience he had as a kid. Govan's first online hate comment at the age of 12 started his journey of living life under the pressure to please others. "your opinion" grew out of that experience, stripping away the weight of outside criticism and turning it into a message about owning your power and not letting negativity shape how you see yourself.
Courtney Govan wrote the track, and Bret Paddock produced it, with background vocals and arrangement by Anthony Gargiula and Courtney Govan. The collaborative production supports the song's very personal subject matter and keeps it focused squarely on Govan's point of view.
"Your Opinion" is a message about realizing that other people will always have opinions. Still, those opinions only become powerful when you let them dictate how you feel about yourself. Govan's approach gives "your opinion" an honest-to-God human quality. The song turns a tough personal experience into something empowering, but still recognizes the exposure behind it.
