London dream-pop duo Oslo Twins Eric C. Davies and Claudia Vulliamy enter the murky realm of dreams, memories and creative imagination with their new five-track EP, "Tresor." Recorded in the band's East London studio, the 16-minute, 23-second collection of songs draws on subconscious images, fleeting thoughts, and emotional fragments that seem to hover just out of reach.
Written entirely by Vulliamy and Davies and produced by Davies, Tresor feels linked by its fascination with places that exist somewhere between the waking world and imagination. Across its five songs, the EP traverses party scenes, memories, dreams, and imagined escapes, making for a distinctly listen.
The title track, "Tresor," grew out of a jam session, with largely improvised lyrics that draw on humorous party imagery. The music was inspired by a night in Berlin, when Vulliamy and friends were caught in a lightning storm on their way to the nightclub Tresor, giving the song an electric sense of excitement.
"I See Mountains" is an inward, upward look, inspired by the sublime and the powerful images certain music can evoke. "Sally" explores the strange awareness of time that arises when we are with people from the past and relates its themes to Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway.
"I Wake Up Slowly" embodies the transition from being stuck in one's head to motion and awakening. "Be Free" draws on a fantasy of escape after a crime. Quiet drama is underscored by timpani and synths, lending it a slightly funereal character. With "Tresor," Oslo Twins create a compact yet imaginative journey through subconscious places, where dreams, memories, and fleeting visions form the sound's foundation.
