Wednesday turns a strange late-night meeting into a song with "Bitter Everyday"

American alt-rock band Wednesday's new release, "Bitter Everyday," draws on a memorable moment from the past, an unusual real-life encounter. Vocals and guitar are handled by Karly Hartzman, drums by Alan Miller, lap steel by Xandy Chelmis, bass by Ethan Baechtold, and guitar by Jake Lenderman, and the band has a story-driven starting point for its newest musical chapter.

"Bitter Everyday," written by Karly Matana Hartzman and produced by Alex Farrar, began with a 2019 meeting. In the small hours of the morning, Lenderman and a friend were drinking and playing guitar when a woman showed up on the porch. She was asked to sing a song she had written, and her impressive voice made a great impression on those who heard her.

Wednesday's "Bitter Everyday," for example, begins with a particularly personal experience. When Hartzman writes songs, she doesn't begin with an abstract idea, but a specific memory. Farrar's production, Hartzman's songwriting, and the band's familiar lineup come together on the track, offering another look into the stories behind their music.
