Hurts strikes back with “Somebody”

Hurts, the British synth-pop duo, return with an up swell of uncut feeling in their latest track, “Somebody,” from their upcoming fifth full-length. After the emotionally cathartic releases of “Redemption,” “Voices,” and “Suffer,” “Somebody” switches gears, revealing a harder-edged, more defiant side to the pair. directed by GRANDMAS, the music video is a perfect extension of the song’s cinematic aura, portraying a universe of defeat, setbacks, and victories.

Hurts describes “Somebody” as a song about “defiance, strength and getting back up when you’ve been knocked down,” and it’s difficult  not to feel that surge of resilience pulsing through each beat. The duo’s synth-pop fingerprints are all there, but they’re deepened and roughened by the other new wrinkle, an urgent, almost raw quality that pushes the song along. The production is sharp, the melodies expansive, and the vocal delivery, simultaneously emotive and authoritative, solidifies it as a sonic standard-bearer for anyone working through life’s disappointments.

With "Faith" on the horizon and a 2021 world tour scheduled, “Somebody” is an early indicator of an album that looks set to combine introspection with modern synth-pop. This is Hurts at their most unyielding, reminding us that even in darkness, there’s space to grow.
