New American Teen producer Deacon Phillippe, aka Deacon, makes a strong first impression on “Long Run,” his glittering collaboration with Scottish indie-pop singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt. A native of Edinburgh and a mere 16-year-old, Deacon already shows an impressive ear for contemporary EDM production, with sweeping hooks and dappled synth textures that lift Nesbitt's signature warmth to the sky. It’s a debut single that could’ve been just a debut single, but becomes something else, a brash, euphoric statement from a young artist unafraid to test the waters for himself and see what his own sound sounds like.
Nesbitt penned the original in Sweden with SHY Martin and Fredrik Häggstam, admitting it was some of her most prolific and fun creative time to date. After Deacon and his co-producer Petey put their stamp on it, the song became a kaleidoscopic, kinetic banger that straddles the line between pop immediacy and EDM intensity. For Nesbitt, it’s all about the discovery that writing brings. I have never written so many songs I love in such a short space of time, but this one felt like magic.
“Long Run” is a tract on collaboration and the ambition of youth. Its ascendant melodies and galloping energy also feel at once casual and crafty, a rare combination that distinguishes Deacon from his peers. The track embodies the rush of pursuing dreams, the bounciness of first love, and that sheer exuberant pop music that makes you want to dance. For listeners, it’s not only a debut, it’s an invitation to Zeal & Ardor’s rise from something you read about on the internet to a talent on the come-up. What a great place to get going and quickly on the back of their debut track released in May, “Long Run is Something Special, a combination of the honest lyricisms, cinematic production, and most notably, the undeniable strength between Deacon and Nesbitt.
