Los Angeles-based Chinese-American alt-pop singer-songwriter Emei takes listeners on a journey through the twists and turns of her inner world with her new EP, "RABBITHOLE," a five-track project inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The EP runs 12 minutes and 35 seconds and turns the pressures, fears, and contradictions of young adult life into an imaginative journey through the mind's rooms.
"RABBITHOLE," inspired by Emei's personal experiences with anxiety and panic attacks, explores the pressures of love, friendship, career, and most importantly, the expectations she places on herself. Each song is a different room in Emei's brain, like Alice's journey through the unknown, and the result is a project that jumps through feelings of panic, frustration, self-reflection, and finally a return to reality.
The EP begins with "RABBITHOLE," a restless intro designed to capture the feeling of falling, panic, and a racing mind. Rushing sounds, breakdowns, and touches clash, simulating the feeling of being trapped while trying to find a way out of overwhelming thoughts. "ALL THESE KIDS" takes a step inward, imagining two Emis, one frightened and observing, the other a confident figure sitting on a throne, creating a striking internal confrontation. "9 LIVES" continues the theme of self-examination but this time, with a focus on frustration and the fear that those who give love and support will eventually get tired of helping to clean up the messes that follow.
The journey continues through "SUGARCOAT" before arriving at "THE PART," the project's final destination and its return to reality. Emei co-wrote "RABBITHOLE" with Boy Blue, Nick Lopez, Kyle Reynolds, Tim Nelson, and Tushar Apte, except for "9 LIVES." Boy Blue, Tim Nelson, Yung Bae, Matt Kahane, and Tushar Apte produced it.
