Mogwai move into uncharted territory with "Fanzine Made Of Flesh"

Scottish post-rock band Mogwai return with a striking new chapter in their sound on "Fanzine Made Of Flesh," a track that blends unexpected influences while preserving the individuality that has long been the band's hallmark. Stuart Leslie Braithwaite wrote "Fanzine Made Of Flesh," and John Congleton produced it with a confident sense of curiosity. Mogwai currently consists of Stuart Braithwaite on vocals and guitar, Dominic Aitchison on bass, Martin Bulloch on drums, and Barry Burns on guitar. Together, they bring the track to life while letting its more experimental qualities come to the fore.

"Fanzine Made Of Flesh" was written in Brooklyn in the fall of 2023 while Braithwaite was staying at Alex Kapranos's house. From its earliest conception, the track has drawn on a strange mix of references, pulling from the worlds of ABBA, Swervedriver, and Kraftwerk. That combination suggests something deliberately out of the ordinary, rather than being based on a single sound, giving the track its own identifiable character.

The song was originally sung straight before the band decided to add vocoding on the last day of recording. That last-minute creative decision adds another layer to a song already built on unexpected contrasts, helping "Fanzine Made Of Flesh" feel fresh and different within Mogwai's catalog.
