Nian Tong unveils a new track, "What's On Your Mind," a specific kind of bravery in bundling heartbreak in sunshine, and one does that. It is one of the most intimate offerings to date from the London-based singer-songwriter, producer, and composer, and you could be forgiven for mistaking it for a playful indie-pop daydream at first.
Snapping with toe-tapping rhythms, head-bopping beats, and poly colored textures in the same vein as Benny Sings, there is a warm glow to the track from its very first moment. It is playful and buoyant, gravitating toward a more modern pop palette than his earlier, more traditionally arranged works. Yet beneath the feel-good surface, there's a devastating honesty. Nian has a way of spinning modern love, its intimacy, its confusion, its unspoken distance, into something that can feel both whimsical and painfully real.
Vocally, his delivery is endearingly close, probably because it was recorded in his personal studio. You can hear the intimacy with which he stacked each supporting harmony. Producing and performing, Nian calibrates the emotional arc of the song with a delicate touch, marshaling sweetness and sincerity without tipping into sentimentality. Mastering by Kevin Peterson, gives it a polished sheen, elevating the track without watering down its charm.
"What's On Your Mind" feels like a gentle push in a distracted world, it's what we often think but rarely say out loud. It's like the pain of desiring clarity in love, all shrouded in melodies that might make you smile even as they sting. With this track, though, Nian Tong proves that optimism and openness do not cancel each other out, they can dance together quite gracefully.
