Empire Child steps forward with purpose on “Trace the Race”

Empire Child drops a new musical project "Trace the Race." An entirely new voice forged during years working in the engine room of music culture. Ruth Rothwell, whose history includes the UK dance explosion of the 90's, artist development at MCA/Universal, and the discovery of era-defining talent, steps out from behind others' public images into deeply personal work.

"Trace the Race" is a meditation on identity, lineage, and belonging. Inspired by her Indo-Jamaican mother, part of the Windrush generation who migrated to Britain after World War II, and by her father from Cape Town, who escaped apartheid, the song is steeped in the emotional weight of migration and inherited resilience. It is the central idea that your ancestors were once immigrants, not just a slogan but a lived truth.

There's an unforced authority with which Empire Child tells this story. Years of molding other artists have certainly honed her instinct for emotive pacing. The production seems deliberate and meditative, providing space for the story to exhale, less spectacle than substance, which invites us to follow the invisible lines between past and present.

"Trace the Race" is particularly compelling for its point of view from which it is told. This is an artist who has helped soundtrack generations, now she turns the lens inward. The effect is thoughtful, grounded, and resonant. Empire Child might be a new name, but the insight of "Trace the Race" feels well-traveled. A reason to remember that music is not only about where we're headed, but also about recognizing where we've been.
