Slaney Bay explore flirty friendship in new release “That’s Cool”

London’s indie-pop risers Slaney Bay have returned with “That’s Cool,” a quietly magnetic new single out already, a track that plays less like a statement and more like something you’re not entirely ready to call by name.

Following their previous EP “The Long Way Home,” the four-piece, Cait Whitley (vocals), Joel Martin (bass), Will Nicola-Thompson (guitar), and Jonny Burraway (drums), embraces subtlety here, creating a track that takes on life in the in-between. Co-written by the band and self-produced, “That’s Cool” depicts an emotional grey area that many can relate to but seldom express so delicately.

At its heart, the song is about a flirty LGBT+ friendship, you know, the kind filled with lightly touching fingers and loaded eye contact. It’s about those near-accidental hand brushes that stay just a second too long, the instinct to search for one particular body in an otherwise crowded room, and the internal tussle of trying to decipher what it all means. Slaney Bay isn’t rushing to define it, rather, they’re letting the ambiguity breathe.
