Kim Petras released a new single, “Jeep,” a song shaped by real-life chaos and made deeply personal. The track’s story started with the evacuation from the L.A. fires. Overnight, everything changed, and she was in a recording session. Instead of stopping the creative process, she and her team took everything down in minutes and continued to work later that night when they arrived in the desert.
The song was inspired by an uncomfortable moment. She now calls her favorite song “Jeep.” Everything in 20 minutes, and then we wrote that song at night when we got to the desert. But the heart of the song, beyond the circumstances of its creation, lies in a deeply personal memory from her childhood in Germany. In her small town, people called any truck a Jeep, Kim said. That led to an awkward yet memorable goof on a date.
There's a really sweet story behind it because in Germany, in my small town, we call any truck a Jeep, even if it's not a Jeep. I went on a date with a guy, and I’m like, I love your Jeep. And he was like, That's not a Jeep. He was badly treated. That little cultural misunderstanding eventually became a love song about personality, language, and connection. I was giving off an ESL vibe, and to turn that into a love song really resonated with me, she said.
